MULTIPLE PERSONALITY: GATA meets CLARA AKO DE ARIZ

Can you imagine features of your own identity living in parallel realities? This is exactly what Clara's project, “ide(m/n)tities”, is about. As a method of expression, she creates and performs alter egos, through a creative process of self-analysis.
Clara presents different personality traits through the characters of “Crisis”, “Mediocre”, “Petra”, “Maxmotives”, and “Ion” — “Ion” being exclusively premiered here in GATA magazine.
In her own words: "It is a project that reflects the multiple identities that transit through the same person. The possibilities for identity when the same being is exposed to different parallel realities”.
Thanks to stylised filters and various digital editing tools, she presents different layers of her personality, exposed to what would be alternate realities living under different circumstances. We talked to Clara about herself, each of the characters she materialises, their mental pictures, the Metaverse, her origins, and much more.

Te imaginas conocer rasgos de tu propia identidad viviendo en realidades paralelas?
El proyecto de Clara, ide(m/n)tidades, trata exactamente de esto. Cómo método de expresión, gracias a un análisis de sí mismx, su persona y un afán por crear y performar alter egos, Clara nos presenta diferentes rasgos de su personalidad a través de la encarnación de Crisis, Mediocre, Petra, Maxmotives e Ion, siendo este último personaje un estreno en exclusiva de la artista con el equipo de GATA Magazine.
En sus propias palabras: “Es un proyecto que reflexiona sobre las múltiples identidades que transitan dentro de una misma persona. Las posibilidades identitarias de un mismo ser expuestas a diferentes realidades paralelas”, dice cuando le preguntamos por el origen de este proyecto.
Así, y gracias a un filtro de estilización y diversas herramientas de edición digital, representa diferentes capas de su persona, expuestas en lo que serían diferentes realidades viviendo otras circunstancias. Hablamos con Clara sobre sí misma, sobre cada unx de los personajes que materializa y sus cuadros mentales, sobre el Metaverso, sus orígenes y mucho más.

GATA: First of all, tell us a little about yourself, how would you define yourself and your artistic imagination?
CC: I would define myself as a multidisciplinary artist, I guess. As a neurotic and depressive person who tries to transform their experiences into narratives and pseudo-realities.

GATA: Antes que nada, cuéntanos un poco de ti, cómo te definirías a ti mismx y a tu imaginario artístico?
CC: Me definiría como artista multidisciplinar, supongo. Como una persona neurótica y depresiva que intenta transformar sus vivencias en narrativas y pseudo-realidades.

GATA: What does this project consist of? How did the idea of doing something like this come up?
CC: I have always had the need to create alter egos. I have a lot of social phobia and, for me, performing different personalities has been my natural way of relating.
The idea of creating this project came from the need to bring together all the artistic disciplines that I love such as photography, literature or design among others, and the need to feel that I had to begin to unmask and/or unravel parts of my life and psyche, even if it was generating fictitious realities.

En qué consiste este proyecto? Cómo surgió la idea de hacer algo así?
Siempre he tenido la necesidad de crear alter egos. Tengo mucha fobia social y, para mí, performar distintas personalidades ha sido mi forma natural de relacionarme.
La idea de crear este proyecto surgió de la necesidad de juntar todas las disciplinas artísticas que amo como son la fotografía, la literatura o el diseño entre otras, y la necesidad de sentir que debía empezar a desenmascarar y/o desengranar partes de mi vida y psique, aunque fuera generando realidades ficticias.

GATA: Could you introduce us to each of the characters behind your project “íde(m/n)tidades”?
CC: It's a project that reflects on the multiple identities that transpire within the same person. The identity possibilities of the same being exposed to different parallel realities.
It is developed through five characters with different narratives in comic format, which I have been able to "unravel", as I said before, from my personality. They start from the same identity: me, but depending on their experiences, they are completely different people.
CRISIS, for example, represents my more social side. The person who has a status, who uses networks to share their life. MEDIOCRE on the other hand represents my insecurity. My inability to believe in what I do, my feeling of disconnection or loneliness, bad luck, loss of meaning or goals. PETRA is the objectification and aesthetic pressure I have experienced and, also, all the violence and traumas that have been exerted on my body because of the fact that I am a woman. ION symbolizes the obligation to perform gender roles and stereotypes but also represents a journey of self-identification at a very intimate level of gender and sexuality. Finally, MAXMOTIVES is my constant need for escape. To imagine realities that don't exist in my head; thoughts and hypotheses that I come up with. It's a rather immaterial character.

GATA: Podrías presentarnos a cada uno de los personajes que se encuentran detrás de tu proyecto íde(m/n)tidades?
CC: Es un proyecto que reflexiona sobre las múltiples identidades que transitan dentro de una misma persona. Las posibilidades identitarias de un mismo ser expuestas a diferentes realidades paralelas.
Se desarrolla a través de cinco personajes con narrativas distintas en formato comic, que he podido “desengranar”, como antes comentaba, a partir de mi personalidad. Parten de una misma identidad: yo, pero dependiendo de sus vivencias son personas completamente distintas.
CRISIS por ejemplo representa mi parte más social. La persona que performa un estatus, que usa las redes para compartir su vida. MEDIOCRE en cambio, representa mi inseguridad. Mi incapacidad por creer en lo que hago, mi sentimiento de desconexión o soledad, la mala suerte, pérdida de sentido o metas. PETRA es la cosificación y presión estética que he vivido y, también, todas aquellas violencias y traumas que han ejercido sobre mi cuerpo por el hecho de ser mujer. ION simboliza la obligatoriedad de performar unos roles y estereotipos de género, pero, también, representa un viaje de auto identificación a nivel de género y sexualidad muy íntimo.
Finalmente, MAXMOTIVES es mi necesidad constante de evasión. De imaginar realidades que no existen en mi cabeza; pensamientos e hipótesis que me planteo. Es un personaje bastante inmaterial.

GATA: Visually and aesthetically, who or what inspires you to recreate them?
CC: I draw inspiration from my life. I tend to use my clothes, my furniture and my experiences (laughs). Obviously everything goes through a very perfectionist and rigid filter of stylisation and fiction, but everything is more real and naturalistic than it seems.

GATA: Visual y estéticamente, en qué o quién te inspiras para la recreación de estos?
ES: Me inspiro en mi vida. Suelo usar mi ropa, mis muebles y mis experiencias (risas). Obviamente todo pasa por un filtro de estilización y de ficción muy perfeccionista y rígido, pero todo es más real y naturalista de lo que parece.

GATA: How do you think the world understands what you wanted to convey?
CC: I always wonder if anyone understands what I do. In the end, it's a complex, long, and exhausting project that I haven't explained much; and in which, moreover, I am unable to produce with the speed that consumption requires. In the end, I do everything by myself: the photography, the sets, the styling, the editing... no one helps me.
I think someone who is very attentive to what I upload can understand that I create characters that talk about things that happen to them, with which sometimes, they can connect. But the rest, I think they either "don't understand anything" or they just appreciate it in a more superficial, more aesthetic way. Even so, now I am going to change the format, it will be better understood. They are going to stop being separate posts to be complete micro comics of several vignettes. Basically as complete comics in a single post.

GATA: Cómo crees que el mundo entiende lo que has querido transmitir?
CC: Siempre me pregunto si alguien entiende lo que hago. Al final es un proyecto complejo, largo, y agotador que no he explicado mucho;
y en el que, además, soy incapaz de producir con la rapidez que el consumo requiere. Al final, lo hago todo sola: la foto, los sets, el estilismo, la edición… no me ayuda nadie.
Creo que alguien que esté muy atento a lo que subo puede entender que creo personajes que hablan de cosas que les pasan, con las que a veces, pueden conectar. Pero el resto, creo que o bien “no entienden nada” o simplemente lo aprecian de modo más superficial, más estético. Aun así ahora voy a cambiar el formato, se va a entender mejor. Van a dejar de ser posts separados para ser micro historietas completas de varias viñetas. Básicamente como cómics completos en un solo post.

GATA: Something that calls our attention is that each of the personalities you create represent different realities and, at the same time, there are also those that seem to personify artificial intelligences. What would you say are the most notable differences between these avatars?
CC: They all connect at the point where they could be layers of the same person. Human beings, as hard as it is to believe, are very deep beings. The most notable differences are therefore the different life experiences that I try to capture through them. They all represent very different moments in my life and very diverse experiences. You know when you look back and say, wow, I was a different person, but you are still you? Well, that's what it is.

GATA: Algo que nos llama bastante la atención es que cada una de las personalidades que creas representan diferentes realidades y, al mismo tiempo, también las hay que parecen personificar inteligencias artificiales. Cuáles dirías qué son las diferencias más destacables entre estos avatares?
CC: Todos conectan en el punto en el que podrían ser capas de una misma persona. Los seres humanos, aunque cueste de creer, somos seres muy profundos. Las diferencias más destacables son por lo tanto, las distintas experiencias vitales que intento plasmar a través de ellos. Todos representan momentos muy distintos de mi vida y vivencias muy diversas. Sabes cuándo miras al pasado y dices, buah, era otra persona, pero en verdad sigues siendo tú? Pues es eso.

GATA: It's also interesting that more and more artists are directing their work to Onlyfans without uploading totally pornographic or explicit content. In the case of “Petra”, what is the relationship between the character and the site?
For me, it was to give the character another tool to tell her story. “Petra “is a character that is completely objectified, she seems to be made for a single purpose. I wanted to see what kind of relationship would be created by giving her this communicative tool with people who follow me; to see what kind of person would subscribe, what would they ask for?

GATA: También es interesante el hecho de que cada vez hay más artistas que dirigen sus obras hacia Onlyfans sin subir contenidos totalmente pornográficos o explícitos. En el caso de Petra, cuál es la relación que existe entre el personaje y la página?
CC: Para mí, era dotar al personaje de una herramienta más para contar su historia. Petra es un personaje que se cosifica completamente, parece que esté hecho con una sola finalidad. Quería ver un poco la relación que se creaba al darle esta herramienta comunicativa con gente que me sigue; a ver qué tipo de persona se suscribiría, qué le pedirían…

GATA: You are a creative, artistic and film director. Besides this project, what other projects have you been involved in?
Well, I've done some fashion campaigns, photos for Sita Abellán but uff... what feeds me is being an advertising art director. I've also worked on short films, music videos, helped with other projects as creative director or editor and, right now, I'm writing a miniseries that I would also direct.

GATA: Eres directora creativa, artística y de cine. Además de este proyecto, en qué otros has estado involucrada?
CC: Pues he hecho algunas campañas de moda, fotos para Sita Abellán pero uff… lo que me da de comer es ser directora de arte de publicidad. También he trabajado en cortometrajes, videoclips, ayudado con otros proyectos como directora creativa o editora y, ahora mismo, escribo una miniserie que también dirigiría yo.

GATA: We are getting closer and closer to the moment when we will not differentiate between the digital and the physical world; soon we will live in virtual realities from which we will be able to work or travel, what do you think about all this?
It scares me when I think about it because I imagine it as a super dystopian and dark future; but, in reality, we are already there. Nowadays it is impossible to know what is true and what is not, with the media, social networks...There are still many people congratulating me for my maternity, for the photo I uploaded pregnant with my ex-partner. My parents also asked me after I uploaded the photo if it was true (it was during full quarantine). It makes me laugh that we are so easily convinced, but above all, it makes me tired. I am quite tired of the current world and the one we are drifting into. Like, where are we going? I don't understand anything.

GATA: Cada vez nos aproximamos más al momento en el que no diferenciaremos el mundo digital y el físico; pronto viviremos en realidades virtuales desde las que podremos trabajar o viajar, qué opinas de todo esto?
CC: Me da miedo cuando lo pienso porqué me lo imagino como un futuro súper distópico y dark; pero, en realidad, ya estamos ahí. A día de hoy ya es imposible saber lo que es verdad y lo que no lo es, con los medios, las redes sociales… Aún hay muchas personas me felicitan por mi maternidad, por la foto que subí embarazada con mi ex pareja. Mis padres también me preguntaron tras subir la foto si era verdad (fue en plena cuarentena). Me da risa que seamos tan fáciles de convencer pero sobretodo, me da fatiga. Me da bastante fatiga el mundo actual y en el que estamos derivando. En plan, hacia dónde vamos? No entiendo nada.

GATA: On a personal level, which of all these avatars would you say most resembles your real self? Which one would you not mind becoming for the rest of your life?
I think “Mediocre”, actually. I would definitely love to become “Maxmotives”: to be on a much more omniscient and philosophical plane. Away from this world.

GATA: A nivel personal, cuál de todos estos avatares dirías que se asemeja más a tu yo-real? ¿En cuál no te importaría convertirte para el resto de tu vida?
CC: Creo que el de Mediocre, la verdad. Me encantaría convertirme sin duda en Maxmotives: estar en un plano mucho más omnisciente y filosófico. Lejos de este mundo.
